Writing Inspiration

As a creative person, inspiration for me comes in many muses. One day it could be the dark and foreboding clouds, the anticipation of them bursting into rain. Another day it could be the silly ramblings of my boys, as they play or even fight with each other.

There are seasons which are more inspirational for me, like Spring and Fall. I love to sit and write in front of our big picture window while the flowers bloom and the hummingbirds dance on the feeder or at the swaying bee balm. Fall brings the changing of the season in bright, bold colors, usually ending in a shower of leaves which end up in brown piles against the green carpet of grass.

People are sometimes my inspiration. More so than not, only pieces of people I know, and don't know, trigger something which usually becomes a character trait (or flaw) in my work. But sometimes, a person makes such a difference in my life that they truly become my muse.

What inspires you to write? What doesn't?

Kris; I find the source of inspiration to be such a tough thing to nail down. It seems to seep in from the edges. I have started to play a private game-- "What do I see right now that I've never seen before?" I am usually shocked at what I discover on my drive into town, one I have down thousands of times.

Thanks for getting me thinking about this. Hmm, might be my blog material for next week!

What doesn't inspire me is the question :) One thing that really inspires me is looking a the night sky, the stars and moon, regardless which phase it's in. And if you throw in a soft breeze and shadows, I'm itching to create. I find inspiration in movies, books, people and like you, clouds.

Cassy, I love your game. What a great way to stir your imagination. I'm going to try it!

My kids! That's where I got my idea for my teen series. Also things I'm fascinated with like fortune telling tools, hence my adult series. I'm also inspired by certain songs, a movie, a news article, etc. Just everyday things around me. Great blog!

For as long as I can remember I've had a need to write. My sister and I wrote a neighborhood newsletter when we were kids and I've been writing ever since. I get edgy when I can't write for some reason. Even on vacation I find time to make notes, some of which are never used.

Thanks for chiming in everyone!

I forgot to mention that songs and dreams also inspire. My women's fiction story, Stolen Years, was completely inspired by a dream I had about an old boyfriend running away from me in Angell Hall (at U of M) while he dragged a young girl behind him. It seemed so real to me that when I woke, I immediately started working on that story.

I've found that I love writing during thunderstorms! It's relaxing ... as long as the power doesn't go out :)
